Use cases › Make one text readable for students at different reading levels

AI use case
Rewrite a reading passage at three reading levels
A great article or primary source is often written way above some students' reading level, and rewriting it by hand for each reading group takes hours.
How to do it
- Paste the original passage into the Modify Reading Level tool in Microsoft's Teach (part of Microsoft 365 Copilot for education), or into a general chatbot like ChatGPT.
- Pick the target grade level, and list the key vocabulary words that must stay in the text even if they are hard.
- Turn on the glossary option, or ask the chatbot for one, so students get simple definitions of those key words at the end.
- Read each version yourself and ask for fixes, such as shorter sentences or a clearer explanation, before you hand it out. Repeat for each reading group.
- Microsoft's support guide gives the example of a social studies teacher turning a university-level primary source into a version lower secondary students can read.
