Four working bots from a consultant who left self-hosted agents

Automation consultant Adam Southey moved his self-hosted OpenClaw and Hermes setup into four bots: support escalations he answers from his phone, changelog-to-blog drafts sent as pull requests, a 7am morning brief and multi-repo dev work. In a dev-plus-infra group chat, one bot traces an outage through monitoring tools and hands the code fix to the dev bot. His rule is to automate only work a person already does. He also suggests four starter bots for trades businesses.

How to set it up

  1. List jobs someone already does each week, and build one bot per real job.
  2. For support, have a bot pull escalated tickets a few times a day and ask you what to do.
  3. Wrap admin actions like refunds in a small admin-only tool so you can approve them from chat.
  4. Use a group chat when one problem needs two bots, like diagnosing and then fixing.
